Call Center Report: Mar. 21-27

Here is your weekly update on the call centers that are opening, closing, and making news worldwide. And don't forget to check our Weekly News Briefs in the news well on the front page for summaries of the week's sometimes sordid, sometimes tragic worldwide call center news.

  • We reported via The Scotsman in February that Dearborn, Michigan-based outsourcer Percepta denied the rumors it was closing its Glasgow, Scotland call center. The company lied. The 130-person center, which handles Ford and Jaguar customer calls is closing in June.

  • Scottsdale, Arizona outsourcer eTelecare Global Solutions has been expanding its Philippines operations. It has four centers and plans on opening a fifth, doubling its employee base of 750 this year. The company also has centers in Arizona.

  • London outsourcer Liberata opened a call center in Barrow, England with 215 workers. The center plans to employ 1,000 workers by 2008.

  • British Airways will be closing call centers in Barbados, Jamaica, Antigua and St. Lucia as a part of a "global efficiency strategy." BA's Jacksonville, Florida call center will take up the slack.

  • Dell opened a Pasay City, Philippines call center, attended by Michael Dell himself. The center will employ 1,400.

  • The Paris-based outsourcer Capgemini is opening a 500-seat call center in Calcutta, India. The company also has centers in Bangalore and Bombay, and it plans to employ 10,000 workers across the three cities by 2007.

  • Business Excellence Global Media and Webevents will open a call center in Peterborough, England, employing about 100.

  • The United Ways of Vermont's 2-1-1 call center line, which gets 600 calls per month, will become a 24-hour number in response to community demands.

  • Vivatel, Bulgaria's third largest mobile phone company, has opened a 150-person call center in the city of Burgas.

  • Your Selling Team will open a call center in Chadron, Nebraska, employing 100. The company also has a 50-person center in Ainsworth, Nebraska.
