Call Center Report: April 5-11

In this week's update on the call centers that are opening, closing, and making news worldwide: Bank of America shuts down three 600+ agent call centers, plains state senators battle for an Airforce call center, and Royal Caribbean opens a call center shaped like a cruise ship.

  • Canadian outsourcer Minacs Worldwide is hiring 200 agents for its 800-person Riverview, New Brunswick call center.

  • In February we reported that the 600-person Dover, Delaware Bank of America call center wasn't closing, though that city's smaller BOA center was. Now the big one is closing too, along with a 600-person center in Horsham, Pennsylvania, and a 670-person center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

  • Suffolk, England has a fancy new police call center and five new agents will be recruited soon.

  • Speedline, a company that sells point-of-sale software for pizza restaurants, is opening a 50-agent call center in Lynden, Washington where the company is headquartered.

  • Ellsworth Airforce Base will get a call center for the Air Force Financial Services Center, employing 775 people. Senator John Thune is happy.

  • Offutt Airforce Base in Nebraska will not host the Airforce's new personnel financial services call center, and Senator Ben Nelson is not happy. The center will go to South Dakota's Ellsworth Airforce Base.

  • AT&T may keep its Fairhaven, Massachusetts call center open for 60 days longer to help agents find new jobs. Governor Mitt Romney's office offered to help the workers in their search. The 185 jobs are being moved to Texas.

  • Virginia-based market research company Issues & Answers has chosen Houghton, Michigan as a location for its new call center. It will be hiring about 100 agents.

  • Time Warner Cable has a new call center in Harlingen, Texas. The center is housed in the company's regional headquarters. It opened with 40 employees.

  • Royal Caribbean International opened a $60 million call center shaped like a cruise ship in Springfield, Oregon. It opened with 250 workers and is planned for 1,000 in three years.

  • Sykes Canada is hiring 350 agents for its London call center, after it got a new contract with an American financial services company. It will be the third London, England center with more than 1,000 employees.

  • Pennsylvania-based Sovereign Bank is opening a 100-person call center in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It will take customer calls from New York-based Independence Community Bank, which Sovereign is buying.
