Call Center Report: April 26-May 2

In this week's update on the call centers that are opening, closing, and making news worldwide: Verizon is making big cuts after its MCI buy, Belfast is reeling after Prudential announces a big closing, and UK marketer LBM offers to pick up a third of Prudential's victims.

  • Dubai-based Emirates Airlines will open a 450-seat call center in Mumbai (a.k.a. Bombay), India.

  • The African nation of Uganda has opened a call center for the Uganda Revenue Authority for taxpayer inquiries, with separate lines for domestic and international taxes.

  • The City of Savannah, Georgia opened a 311 call center to handle municipal inquiries.

  • Verizon is planning some massive lay-offs after its merger with MCI. 1,661 employees at MCI call centers in Austin, Texas; Greenville, South Carolina; Sioux City, Iowa; and Springfield, Missouri will be out of work soon.

  • Cable and Wireless Jamaica will be outsourcing part of its call center to Accent and 200 CWJ employees are wondering if they'll be left behind; the outsourcer may offer them jobs.

  • Millennium Teleservices of Canada will open its third Canadian call center, this one in Oshawa, Ontario. It will employ 150.

  • Virginia-based market researcher Issues and Answers is opening a call center in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The firm also announced a new call center for Houghton, Michigan a few weeks ago.

  • Insurance giant Prudential is closing its Belfast, Northern Ireland call center. All 500 employees will lose their jobs.

  • The U.K. direct marketing company LBM is interested in hiring 130 of the 500 workers being laid off in Belfast, Northern Ireland by Prudential.

  • Naples, Florida-based Sky Angel, a Christian satellite television service company is moving its call center to Cleveland, Tennessee. It will hire 50 people this year and hundreds more later.
