The Call Center Report: June 7-June 21
Two weeks of call center openings and closings from around North America and the world.
- Trading Post, an Australian company that publishes classified ads for private sellers, is eliminating 50 call center positions in Adelaide, Australia. Agents will be offered jobs in other Trading Post centers around the country.

- Bahamian auto parts company Freeport Jet Wash opened a parts department call center in Grand Bahama.

- The South African province of Gauteng is opening three call centers to handle citizen queries about government services. The first center opened this week in Johannesburg and two others, employing 150 people each, will open by the end of the year.

- Verizon Wireless, is hiring 75 new agents at its Henrietta, New York call center. The 900-person center has hired more than 300 people since 2005.

- U.K. mobile phone company Vodaphone will not renew its contract with British outsourcer Vertex in November and consequently, 130 Edinburgh, Scotland agents are wondering if they will be laid off.

- U.K. energy company Powergen is repatriating 980 call center jobs from India back to Britain.

- The London-based bank Abbey is expanding its premium banking service: it will hire 180 call center agents in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

- The Red Cross is opening a volunteer call center in Tulsa, Oklahoma to handle high call volumes after disasters. The Red Cross will have ten such centers nation wide. The Tulsa center is looking for 30-40 volunteer agents.

- Hamilton Relay recently opened a relay call center for the hearing impaired in Albany, Georgia with 70 agents. They hope to reach 100 agents in the future.

- Nebraska-based outsourcer West Corp. is hiring 300 more people at its 650-person Pensacola, Florida call center after getting a new contract with a cable company.

- ICIC One Source, an Indian outsourcer, will open two call centers in the Northern Ireland. That's right, an Indian company expanding into Northern Ireland. The two centers should employ 1,000 people.

- Delta Air Lines will close its Miramar, Florida call center in September. 500 people will out of work; some may transfer to the Tampa center.
