Call Center Report: September 9-18
Yes, even weekly updates needs breaks. The illustrious call center report is back from a relaxing summer vacation with news from Scotland, England, Canada, Florida, and more.
- Lanarkshire, Scotland's beCogent may be hiring as many as 350 new call center workers by the end of the year, which would be good news for the 250 Aviva Insurance call center staff laid off from jobs in Glasgow and Bishopbriggs recently.

- Office Depot will cut 250 call center jobs in Boca Raton, Florida; the company says it plans to find other positions for all 250 workers.

- Omaha, Nebraska outsourcer Sitel will be cutting 202 jobs in Birmingham, Alabama unless it can secure a pending client contract.

- Dallas-based outsourcer Stream is looking for 300 agents for a Tampa, Florida call center. Stream's contract is with a computer manufacturer.

- Now that Walmart.com is its own company, it no longer needs call center outsourcer Convergys; the online arm of the big box giant took over Convergys's Hattiesburg, Mississippi facility and plans to expand it. The new and improved center will have 600 workstations.

- Kohl's department store is opening a 65-person credit card call center in Corsicana in North Texas.

- U.K. insurance giant Norwich Union is laying off 450 workers in York, England. The company is moving 1,000 jobs to India and 500 IT jobs to other outsourcers.

- Air Canada is cutting 280 call center jobs in various parts of Canada -- mostly Toronto. Online ticket purchases are partly to blame, but the company says the cuts may be seasonal, with positions returning later.

- Colorado outsourcer TeleTech Holdings is hiring 300 call center agents in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The contract is with a wireless phone company.

- BellSouth is closing its 61-person Paducah, Kentucky call center in November because of a 25-30% drop in landline customers. BellSouth has closed nine similar centers in the region since January.
