Call Center Report: September 25-October 2
News updates from America, Canada, the U.K., and the Dominican Republic.
- St. Louis, Missouri-based cable TV company Charter Communications is closing six call centers around the U.S., laying off 1,000 workers in Alabama, California, Michigan, New York, Tennessee, and Texas. The agent positions will be outsourced to Englewood, Colorado-based TeleTech, which operates centers in Canada, Mexico, and the Philippines.

- AT&T is repatriating 2,000 call center jobs from a broadband tech support center in India. The move back to America is the result of a salary and benefits deal with the Communications Workers of America.

- Outsourcer Stream is opening a second call center in the Dominican Republic, with 450 agents. The first center employs 800. Both centers will be serving two unnamed U.S. clients.

- Canadian outsourcer Minacs Worldwide is not only keeping its Sakatoon, Saskatchewan call center (though labor costs are rising); it's also hiring 120 agents to work on the Apple computer tech support contract.
